Almost 500 pages of oral history of the bay area punk scene? Yes! When I thought I will never read – or even enjoy – another oral history book about punk Boulware and Tudor deliver this great documentary of one of the more important scenes. They interviewed a little over 200 (!) people for this indeed, profound project, which chronicles over two decades of bay area punk. From the Mabuhay to Gilman Street, east bay pop-punk to Green Day, the creation of Maximumrocknroll, Epicenter, Blacklist – Tim Yohannan, Biafras bid for mayor and his accident at Gilman. The murder of Sammy’s girl friend, punk houses in the east bay, B.O.B., SF skins, the Farm, drugs, alcohol, fights, geekcore… there is so much information in this book, it is impossible to mention it all here. As a matter of fact, the authors had so much material it could not even fit in this book, because of this, they set up www.gimmesomethingbetter.com where you can find many many more storys about the bay area. What makes this so interesting, compared to other boring oral history books, is that there has been something going on there, there was content (yes, also politics) in the scene, not only music and very varied individuals involved who share their wonderful, weird, intelligent, horrible and interesting views on all the ongoings. The authors let everyone, good or bad, have their say, which allows one to explore the history from different ankles and – maybe – come to a private conclusion. So if you wanna learn about the rise and fall of Lookout Records, the rise of Green Day leading to one of the biggest bands in the world, people who bring dead dogs on stage, skinhead violence, gender topics…. I have to stop, it is just too much. It is a great read and higly recommended. And I dont think this is only the case because I know alot of the people interviewed personally since over two decades, it is a great book about a still interesting ongoing scene with a long history. Was für eine großartige Idee! Die Tochter beschwert sich das die philosphischen Bücher vom Vater immer so schwer bis nicht zu verstehen sind und die beiden unterhalten sich zu den unterschiedlichen Themen in einer Art und Sprache wie sie jeder versteht. Und, es hat hervorragend geklappt. “Natürlich” kommt dabei nicht grade “neues” heraus, aber das war ja weder so gedacht, geschweige denn erwartet. Das Buch ist in drei große Kapitel unterteilt: “Über das Leben, das Universum und den ganzen Rest”, “Die Kunst des Lebens” und “Der Traum von einer besseren Welt”. Dort werden dann so Fragen diskutiert bzw. erklärt wie: “Gibt es einen Grund dafür, das wir existieren? (nicht wirklich), Sind die Dinge so, wie sie uns erscheinen?, Gibt es einen Gott? (sehr wahrscheinlich nicht), Gibt es ein Leben nach dem Tod? (nein), Ist alles vergänglich? (ja), Sollten wir Stolz auf unsere Leistungen sein? (nein), Vom guten Leben und guten Sterben, Dürfen wir töten?, Sollten wir toleranter sein? (nicht zwingend)…. um nur einige der Themen zu nennen. Das Buch liest sich locker durch, die beiden sagen im Prinzip “alles”, viel mehr kann man dazu auch nicht sagen. Einge der philosphischen Themen sind natürlich schon ein wenig “theoretisch” und man mag schnell von Wortklauberei sprechen, aber das liegt in der Natur der Sache und kommt kaum vor, im Gegenteil hier und da gibt es auch eine Prise Humor. Knapp 300 Seiten die man prima an Eltern, Jugendliche, Kinder, Gläubige und allen anderen Leuten geben kann damit sie mal die “basics” verstehen. Es geht natürlich viel um Humanismus, Ethik und den Menschen und sein Denken an sich. Ich fand das Buch sehr interessant und auch spannend und kann es wirklich jedem Empfehlen, sollte eigentlich Pflichtlektüre in jeder Schule werden. Und auch für ein paar Oberschlaumeier aus der “Szene” ist dies genau das richtige. Lesen! 17,95 Euro (dolf)

The author played in Black Angel’s Death Song and Trash Can School and was a promoter for Al’s Bar in Los Angeles. This book is about his personal experiences around the early 90s when out of the underground/punk/hardcore scene a new branch evolved, quickly known as grunge. A music that was partly super boring (because of the rock roots) and certainly stripped itself from alot of ideals of the punk scene – basically a bunch of young (often drug driven) ex-punks trying to be succesfull. But the book is a good and quick read, Miller was behind the scenes and tells a club level look on how this scene started and fell. So if you are into Hole/Courtney Love, Jane’s Addiction, L7, Tad, Nirvana… this is certainly for you. And even if not, it is still a good read, since he concentrates on the interesting things happening and gives alot of info about what was going on back then. Tons of great storys, about bands, booze, drugs, police, clubs, tours… Rock’n'Roll Los Angeles from 1985 to 1996, but most of the action takes place during the years 1989 through 1992.

This was a sucker to get thru and I was so happy once I finnished with this book, for various reasons…. One reason is its length, alomst 400 pages in 2 columns per page with only a few small photos here and there, then there is the amount of people, the author of the book Liz Worth, spoke to: almost 150(!) people of which I have never even heard the names of (ca.98%) and what had most of these people to say? Not much, at least not much of interest. The same boring old bullshit over and over again, little memorys of people from 30 years ago. This could have been a interesting book if the author would have edited her material and made a 100 page book out of it, so more people can learn about unknown Toronto punk bands like Diodes, Viletones, Teenage Head, B-Girls, Curse, Denics, Forgotten Rebels, Uglys…… I can not recall it ever was such a pain in the ass to read thru a book. Therefore I got a pretty good insight in the Toronto-scene from back then. What a bunch af loosers, most people only had drugs and alcohol on their mind, some of the scenesters where impertinent brats, others where full on stupid thugs. Most of the bands got together in order to “make it” and now speak about “what could have happend if…” to their bands, passed chances and about the rivalry that was going on. Reading how many drugs and alcohol was consumed back then, it surprises me that so many people have relativly clear memory, when what they shoud remember is nothing. There is a couple of funny/intersting storys of happenings and individulas, but those get totally lost in the mass of hot air expressed by most of the people. And, it is mostly about total chaos, pain, betrayal, dissappointments, failure… mostly negative aspects of punk. Usually when you read a great book about a lengendary scene you say “I wish I could have been there”, in this case I can only say: “I’m so glad I was not around!” And, dont get me wrong, this is not my perception, this bases on what the people who have been there are telling the reader of the book. I spent already way too much time of my life on this… can not recommend, unless you have been around back then in Toronto and know half of the people. I’m afraid this is the final nail in the coffin of “oral history punk books”, if I ever run into another book like this I will stop reading it. 39,99 Us $ (dolf)

Ich muss hier etwas weiter ausholen, denn es geht bei den Stage Bottles eigentlich um zwei Bands, denn Olaf und später Marcel spielen auch noch bei den BLAGGERS aus London (ja genau die). 
Nun bin ich selber gar nicht so alt und dennoch irgendwo in den 90ern stecken geblieben, immer mit dem Gefühl im Bauch, gestern sei das Millenium noch in weiter Ferne gewesen. Bei Propagandhi aus Winnipeg, Kanada, denke ich also zwangsläufig an das Fat Wreck Chords Debut How To Clean Everything, das aber mittlerweile 15 Jahre zurückliegt.
Von Fatwreck neben Me First and The Gimme Gimmes als eine All-Star Band angepriesen, sollen Only Crime wohl besonders Good Riddance Fans über deren Auflösung hinwegtrösten, da doch Russ Rankin hier singt. Auch wenn man seine Stimme sicherlich wiedererkennt, hat er sich doch einem anderen Stil verschrieben und das Konzept geht, was Publikumsresonanz betrifft, nicht ganz auf. Zu kantig ist der Hardcore, der zwar melodisch ist, aber das eher im Stile der alten Helden wie Black Flag, deren Schlagzeuger Bill Stevenson sich ebenfalls dieser Formation zugehörig fühlt.
Norton – Luci (Gesang, Gitarre), Marcel (Trommler), Pogo (Gitarre, Gesang) und Baba (Bass, Chor) – machen alle schon seit Ewigkeiten Musik. In welchen Bands sie schon so alles gespielt haben, wird im Interview gesagt. Sie sind aus Zürich, Schweiz, und haben ein wunderbares erstes Album veröffentlicht.

Es gab Zeiten da habe ich mich mehr für Musik interessiert, die im strengeren Sinne am Begriff Hardcore orientiert ist. Zu oft habe ich nun für den Großteil der aktuell austauschbaren Bands mit beinahe monatlich wechselnden Namen, ihren Trendlabels, ihr Merchandise, ihre Preorderdeals und dem neuen Hype um Schuhe nur ein müdes Lächeln übrig. So gehe ich nie auf Konzerte um Tackleberry zu sehen, trotzdem komme ich nicht umhin, Tackleberry aufgrund ihrer scheinbar unermüdlichen Liveaktivitäten regelmäßig im Vorprogramm oder gelegentlich auch als Hauptact zu sehen.

Love the cover, it says so much about california and the “beginning” of skateboarding… but first there is the format of this photobook – 30 x 40 (!) cm, that is big – Hardcover. Hollands photos where first shown at a gallery in Los Angeles in 2006 and are now available in this 84 page book. If you are a friend of big photos, you will be satisfied here, since alot of the shots are spreads! Almost real! Being no skater himself, Hugh Holland was fascinated by the skating kids in the mid seventies skating the streets, pools and parks of the greater Los Angeles area. At first I was a bit disturbed by some of the photos showing only young naked boys in shorts… but that was the way the kids back then looked like (lots of headbands) and that was how they skated, sometimes even barefoot (like on a surfboard). It is great to see this sequenze of skateboarding, the simple boards and the kids just skating for fun and trying to impress one another or some of the bystanders. The covershot is also as a spread in the book, unfortunally the only thing missing is a blue sky, otherwise it is the perfect scene of a Huntington Beach sidewalk surfer: young kid, shredded jeans, bare upper part of the body, tanned, doing a turn in front of two young girls walking down the sidewalk, perfect body shape in bikini, long hair – tanned. Not all the photos show skaters in action, sometimes they just stand around and stare in the camera – or shred a pool barfoot, downhill skate into the sunset, do a handstand on the board on the boulevard, lots of pool and park action and at least one shot of a young girl skating. In the end you have an index of the photos, that could have used some more info than it has, but I’m sure it was not available anymore….. There is also a short interview in different languages with the photographer. If you want to know how and where it all started (actually, there have been skateboards since the early sixties, so it began a bit earlier…), this book will show you! Now I wish there would be photos (or at least one) when I started skating a little bit later when the first (?) wave of skateboarding hit Europe…. but that is another story. 39,95 $ (dolf)

In der Rezension zum Band 1 in Trust # 123 vom April 2007 schrieb ich am Ende: “…ich kann das empfehlen, 96 Seiten bestes Underground Edutainment …” Und was soll ich sagen der zweite Band ist auch voll gelungen, allein die Tatsache das ich das Ding in einem Rutsch durchgelesen hab spricht für die hohe Qualität der Geschichten und die erneute Kurzweiligkeit. Auch diesmal ein schöner 4 farbiger Hardcover Band im Format 19 x 26,5. Michalke ist seinem Stil treu geblieben – also nicht perfekt aber gekonnt – der Zeichenstil. Die Comic-Protagonisten sind natürlich die gleichen geblieben, haben sich aber – wie im richtigen Leben – teilweise gewollt weiterentwickelt, oder das Leben hat sie eben in Situationen getrieben in die einen das Leben so treibt. Das macht die Geschichten auch wieder so authentisch, weil sie eben auch im echten Leben so oder so ähnlich passieren – also zumindest in Punkrock/Politik Subkulturen ohne dabei zu vergessen über den Tellerrand zu blicken. Also wer wissen will wie es mit Sandra, Fricka, Markus, Michael den Punks Sandro und Johnny und vielen anderen Figuren weitergeht, was sie so erlebt haben und wie sich ihre Leben entwickelt haben kann hier wieder bedenkenlos zugreifen. Michalke hat seine Kritik an den jeweiligen Szenen nicht entschärft, spielt nach wie vor mit den Szene-Klischees und hat einen prima Humor. Vorwort von FIL und Michael inclusive. 15.- Euro (dolf)

This is a photobook by Sergej Vutuc, with a text by Jocko Weyland, 104 pages with 70 b/w illustrations, hardcover 24 x 25,5 cm – very nice paper. There is photos of some skateboarding, street scenes of citys and other stuff. The photos have a strange feel to them because of the quality /style they are shown, blurry, rather dark and depressing. Unfortunally I have to say I’m not very impressed with what I see…. or I simply dont understand the concept of Sergejs book. The motifs are in any order, I did not see too many “outstanding” pics. Dont like, or simply dont get it.

This is an amazing book, 300 pages full colour filled with stickers, stickers, stickers of all sorts. Let me quote the table of contents: “Zeitgeist, Music, Skate, Brands, Graffiti, Themes, Handmades, Sociopolitical, Artists, Unconventional, Special Projects”. If you think this book has no text, you are wrong. There is introductions and you get to know sticker collectors and their obsession. Each chapter has a short intro but of course the main focus is on the stickers – thousends of them. Of course there is tons of crap in here too but it is so nice put together that it does not matter. And of course that is what you get when you “concentrate” on stickers – there is good and bad. For some it is the ultimate art form, for others they are a waste of the enviroment. Some transport messages, are funny, stupid, clever… it is all in here. I enjoyed most parts of the book and had a great time looking at it. And, it was very inspiring, so inspiring that it made me get some Trust-Stickers going again and what else can a book ask for! 35.- $ (dolf)

Sehr geil, Arbeiten und Portraits von u.a. Senor Burns, Fritte, Slowboy, Altin Village, Sounds of Subterrania, Red Can Records, Nikolaushaus… (insgesamt 19 Künstlerportraits/Arbeiten) das hier ist der Katalog zu einer Ausstellung im Feierwerk/Farbenladen die vergangenes Jahr (2010) im Sommer stattfand. Zu sehen gibt es einen Überblick über die Strömungen in der Siebdruck Kunst weltweit. Neben den Werken der unterschiedlichen Künstler gibt es auch Portraits dieser. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt aber auf der Siebdruckkunst, hier in erster Line in Form von Konzertpostern, Artworks und Cover-Abbildungen. Das Buch macht Spass und – wie bei solchen Büchern üblich – natürlich trifft nicht alles den Geschmack des Lesers, aber die Bandbreite ist so gross und vor allem so interessant, das für jeden was dabei ist. Vorausgesetzt man liebt den Kunst-Underground und das “Street-Art-Flair” das sich durch den ganzen Katalog zieht. Sehr schön! Zusätzlich gibt es noch nützliche Tipps für die Praxis.
Das Buch hat ein handliches 21×14,8 cm (100 Seiten) Format und ist mit 10,90 Euro sehr günstig. Leider muss auch gesagt werden das für Posterkunst oder auch Plattencoverartwork so ein Format einfach zu klein ist, finde ich. Die Werke kommen nicht wirklich zur Geltung. Vielleicht findet sich ja mal ein “grosser” Verlag, der das ganze als großformatiges Coffeetable-Buch rausbringt, verdient hätte es das! Aber ich will nicht meckern, nur anregen! (dolf)

Here is a book written by a fan for fans. Fortunally Earles did speak to Grant Hart and Greg Norton while – unfortunally – Bob Mould declined. You will not find many “dirty stories” about their drug use or sexuality, which is good, even thou it is part of their history and therefore kinda missing. The author portraits the band as one of the pioneers of the DIY-Hardcore-Movement in the Usa in the early eighties, that was new to me, since by the time the band came to Europe, there was not much left of hardcore, neither musically nor in their business appearance. Anyway, the author is convinced of the importance of the artists work and documents it well while trying to tell a good story. That works in parts, in others not and I wish some more focus was on critisism.
Here and there the book could have used some better editing, since certain parts seem to be in twice…. Andrew Earles talks alot about the albums, the single songs, about the music of the band. Something every fan loves to read, not me. In the end I have mixed feelings about this book. Every fan will love it, it does a ok job in documenting and informing but it would have helped if the author had a little distance, and I dont mean the distance to the time and scene the band started out.
Hüsker Dü was a great band that went from hyperfast hardcoresongs to great modern Indy-Rock and beyond (not to their benefit, in my eyes). Of course you get all the album listings and collector info one expects. On top of that some pics and Hüsker artwork. 280 pages hardcover, 24.- $ (dolf)
