You thought there is a lot of skateboards in the 2004 release of Clivers „Disposable“ book? You think that can not be topped? You are wrong. Sean Cliver topped himself. There is 1000‘s (thousends) of skateboards pictured in this 368 page hardcover (229×279) reference book. It starts off with a introduction, talks about collecting skateboards and in general, introduces you to the Skatelab and the Board Gallery and then it is skateboards, skateboards, skateboards in chronical chapters 1960 – 1970, 1970 – 1980, 1980 – 1990 and 1990 – 2000. There was even a section planned for post 2000 boards, but the author ran out of room. Therefore you only get to see a couple of Bulldog decks before you enter the „Freestyle Ghetto“ followed by „Prototypes“ and a gallery of boards that have been navigated by pioneers and pros. It ends with a bunch of signed decks. That would be enough history for your eyes only, but you also get lots of storys, anecdotes and historylessons from skaters, designers and industry people – some of them have been in the skate biz since the beginning! I thought of nameing names, but I save that – everybody is in here. No need to pick out any „special“ person, skater or story – they are all famous, rich or legends and have mostly interesting storys to tell. Which is good, it would have been deadly to only have all those boards there, but this way the text decentralizes nicely. Did I mention that every board is „cataloged“? You get the name of the company, name of board, name of artist and the year it was produced – what else can you ask for! Well, you could ask for variations – those are in there too, no worrys. I ind the old decks way more interesting than the newer stuff, even thou the graphics on the newer decks are more colourful and some have lots of artistic value – others don’t. Of course it is also interesting to see the development of shapes over the decades and that makes hope that the days of the „stick“ are counted. Did you know the irst skateboard in Germany was made
back in the late 1960s? The „Original Rollbrettl“ – there is so much amazing stuff one can discover, it is a trip thru the whole of skateboard history. Did I mention that there is also some old ads from the 60s. Did I mention there is not very many pictures of people skateing. Did I mention I found the Banzai deck. (I remember in the mid 1970s I went to a store with a poster to copy the shape of the Banzai deck, so my father could make my own aluminium deck at the factory he was working in… since the original Banzai deck was way too expensive for me… I remember it had a pair of ACS trucks, but cant remember what wheels and, I‘m getting carried away here.) Did I mention that the book looks great. Did I mention the layout looks great. (the print of the description of the boards could be a bit bigger, but it might be me…magnifying glass helps). Did I mention that some of those collectors are insane. But I‘m glad that they are out there to preserve all these boards. Did I mention you need to get this book. 39,90 Euro (dolf)

TYPICAL GIRLS? – The Story of The Slits – Zoe Street Home

Ok, I have to admit, I never was a big fan of this band, cant remember if I did not like the music… anyway… The book tells the detailed story of this very first female punk band. Luckily the author talks directly to all the members of the band, their manager (Don Letts), their mentor (Keith Levene) and many other friends from back then. At first I was sceptical if a “Story of the” book of a band that meant not much too me would be a good read. Let me tell you, it was! At times, in the end, maybe a bit lengthy, but that was no problem. Because you find out so much about the personal crossconnections going on back then, which is no surprise, it was not a big scene. This book brings you back to the beginings of Punk, you not only learn so much about the Slits and their members, but also about the scene from back then – what else can you ask for. For fans of the band a must. The book has more then 200 pages, is paperback and fragmented in: Introduction, Acknowledgements, Timeline (that is “funny”!), The Story of the Slits, Discography and Bibliography.
One thing I learned from this is: back then some people from the punk scene already had a rich background, while others had not. Big surprise? No.
Looking at it from today, it is also easy to “critizise” their involvement with Reggae, while it is debatable if Reggae music is cool or not, one can not debate that rastafari is just another stupid religion that needs to be looked at as just like that… this was not only a problem of the Slits, but of large parts of the punk scene back then…. just thought I had to mention this. Eigentlich hatte ich mich auf das Buch sehr gefreut, weil der Vorläufer, im Jahre 2006 erschienen – “Street Art – Die Stadt als Spielplatz” mich damals sehr begeistert hat. Das kann ich von diesem Buch leider nicht sagen. Zwar ist die Aufmachung wirklich klasse: gebunden, Großformat (196 x 249), gutes Papier. Aber leider sind mir da zum einen viel zu viele Legenden zum Thema drin und zum anderen handelt es sich teilweise um solche verkopften, akademischen Wortakrobatgebilde, das einem wirklich das Spass am Lesen vergeht, bzw. ich mich frage was das eine mit dem anderen zu tun hat. Der Untertitel kündigt das ja schon an, aber das hier dermaßen überanalysiert wird fand ich dann schon etwas übertrieben. Nichts gegen ein paar begleitende Worte zum Thema Street Art, aber man will entweder anderes übers Thema lesen und ansonsten natürlich die Street Art sehen – in diesem Falle im Buch. Somit würde ich sagen das die Kooperation Steet Artists und WissenschaftlerInnen mit einem klaren Sieg der Straßenkünstler ausgegangen ist. Denn, das darf man nicht vergessen, es gibt auch klasse Street Art zu erleben! Und davon kann man ja eigentlich nicht genug sehen. Gewiss, ein paar der Textbeiträge sind auch gut, die “Postkartenberichterstattung” aus ein paar Städten eine feine Idee und ein paar der WissenschaftlerInnen machen sich auch wirklich gute Gedanken…… aber es ist zu wissenschafltich, sorry – zumindest für mich. Somit lege ich das Buch mit gemischten Gefühlen zur Seite und hoffe das beim nächsten Mal einfach mehr Street Art dokumentiert und weniger gelabert wird. Punkt.

Straight Edge: Subkultur, Ideologie, Lebensstil? – Merle Mulder

Ich hab mich schon gewundert, wie will mein denn ein ganzes Buch zum Thema “Straight Edge” füllen, da reichen doch ein paar Seiten….. Aber die Autorin hat das ganze aufgeblasen und noch massig anderen “Stoff” reingenommen… alles SEHR wissenschaftlich und oft auch langweilig bzw. hat es halt nichts mit dem Thema zu tun – aber, auch natürlich interessant! Und manchmal auch lustig (Satanistische Straight Edger…) Nach einer Einleitung gibt’s “grundsätzliches” zu Straight Edge, sehr ausführlich und vieles wird mehrmals wiederholt. Dann gibt es verschiedene Konzepte zur Subkultur (Milton M. Gordon, Alber K. Cohen, Rolf Schwendter, John Clarke) und es wird untersucht ob SE laut diesen Definitionen eine Subkultur ist. Das gleiche passiert dann mit “Ideologie”, verschiedene Konzepte werden vorgestellt (Antoine-L.-C.Destut de Tracy, Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels, Karl Mannheim, Theodor Geiger, Ernst Topitsch, Louis Althusser) und Mukler prüft ob SE unter diesen Aspekten eine Ideologie ist. Das gleiche Spiel dann nochmal mit “Lebensstil” hierbei werden Georg Simmel, Pierre Bourdieu, Wolfgang Zapf, Harmut Lüdtke und Werner Georg vorgestellt – welche sich alle Gedanken zur Defintion von Lebensstil gemacht haben – und dann die Frage beantwortet ob SE ein Lebensstil ist. Zum Abschluss gibt’s dann noch ein Fazit und natürlich massig Quellenangaben, auch der Text ist voll damit, wie das eben bei akademischen Arbeiten so der Fall ist. Da es ja zum Thema eigentlich nicht viel zu sagen gibt, ist es schon erstaunlich das man damit ein ganzes Buch füllen kann. Ausserdem ist es eben – wie meist bei “Trends” die kein Regelbuch kennen, das es halt alles sehr beliebig ist. Alle können sich drauf einigen das SEer keine Drogen nehmen, nicht saufen und keinen promisken Sex haben. Bei allen anderen Themen (vegan, vegetarisch, religion, diy, hardline, usw.) gibt es unterschiefliche Auffassungen. Und da kann man sich dann bis in alle Ewigkeit drüber streiten, wenn man will. Interessant, aber langatmig und wohl nur für ganz spezielle Klientel geeignet. Paperback, 172 Seiten. 18,90 Euro (dolf)

SNIFFIN’ GLUE And Other Rock’N'Roll Habits – Mark Perry

The first issue of Sniffin’ Glue came out exactly 10 years before # 1 of Trust was published – July 1976. It was the first punk fanzine from London (and the first one in Europe). In the beginning it had a small print run (that went up pretty fast!) and only lasted for 12 issues – one year. It was started by Mark Perry, who also played in Alternative TV, ran Step Forward Records and is known for his “big quote” – “Punk died the day The Clash signed to CBS”. I have never seen an issue of Sniffin’ Glue before (and missed out on the first editon of this book in 2000 with a different cover…) so I was strained to find out about what was going on back then and how Punk really started. Lets start here with the facts: The book is a paperback with a bit over 200 pages, a little bigger than A4. Is b/w with an introduction by the author, followed by some music tips from Mark – “The Roots of Punk” (pre 1975), “Punk” (1975 – 1977), “Post-Punk” (1978 – 1980) and then all the Sniffin’ Glue Fanzines are reprinted in Facsimile. Yeah!
Anyone who was not “there” back then, but wants to speak about where Punk came from, what it was all about, how it started and so on needs to read this book, it is a must. While people unknown to Fanzines might find the “layout” strange or outstandig… it looks pretty standard Punk… like zines have been produced back then, typewriter, paper, scissors, glue… I found the “editorial” writing of Mark the most interesting, followed by the “news/gossip”, but of course all the interviews and reviews of records and live concerts also have a lot of relevant content. Check out the interviews/ articles with Damned, Clash, Saints, Subway Sect, Sex Pistols, Generation X, Eater, Adverts, Jam, Models, Cortinas, Chelsea, Panic Button, Buzzcocks…. you can learn so much about the birth of Punk, what went wrong, what it was not about, the antagonism… it is all there. You also learn a lot about the “actors” from back then. It is a great read for anyone interested in Punk-Rock. And, I tell you the lot back then had some funny slang going on…. I let a few quotes speak for themselves:

I’m really fed up with the punters on the “scene” at the moment. At the Clash gig in Harlesden there were lots of stupid kids who kept on acting childish by pogoing in front of the stage. They were going completely over the top by punching and kicking’ each other. It was like being at a fuckin’ football match.

I guess one can look at this book from two sides – so will I: The book documents the hand-made record packaging from the 90’s punk and hardcore area. And there is no better way to celebrate this but display the unique covers, accompanyed by short info on what label/band/year and style of work. You see many “unusual” materials used in record packaging, such as wallpaper, silk-screened- manila-envelopes, tin foil, hand glued together, stapled, stamped – true hand made stuff. Many labels (Gravity, Bloodlink, Lengua Armada, Vermin Scum….) and bands (Los Crudos, MK-Ultra, Guyver-One….) are pictured here – with their covers. The layout has the same DIY feel to it, typwriter, basic. You also get essays by Hardisty and Corleone Records founder Brian Oakley. Landscape format (27×20) caseboard with exposed boards, 144 pages. A great documentation of otherwise probably lost DIY-art.
Or you look at it like this: The book features DIY-cover art, only some of it is truly original, a lot of it was not even born out of a shortage of money, but for the sheer sake of DIY for DIY… most of the bands I have never heard of and many labels are unknown to me. That is probably the case because a lot of these releases where made in very small press runs – not a problem. You can thumb thru the book, read the 2 essays and put it in the shelf. Certainly it has a good documentation value and is well crafted. But…..
Now you ask yourself what I think about it… well, I stagger between the two….. you need to find out for yourself if you want to invest 34,95 $ in this fine book. (dolf)

From the back of the book: “David Horvitz, road manager for indie rock band Xiu Xiu, devised the idea to document the band’s tours by encouraging fans to bring Polaroid film to shows. Photographs of life on the road – from towering truck-stop beacons reaching out into huge blue sky to motel-room antics – were shot and returned to the fans, but not before Horvitz scanned them and compiled a visual diary that captures the non-musical, bare-naked zen of touring life. These images do more than share with fans the moments in between shows; they mirror the landscapes through which we all may travel, signposted with poignant boredom and sublime absurdity, of which we should all be aware.” What an interesting project, such a good idea, in the end Dave end up takeing around 1800 polaroids! I’m sure there is some happy fans out there that have their own uninque polaroid collection. Nice. On to the book, it is casebound (17×19,5 cm) has a couple of introductions/forwords by the photographer and others… there is roughly 100 polaroids (1 each page) in here and I really hope most of the fans out there have better pix. Why? Well, I personally think that most of those photos could have been taken anywhere by anyone and don’t tell me much about Xiu Xiu on tour, the “best” is where someone stands in a toilet bowl and pisses at the same time, a few “band in hotel” shots and what not. Most of the photos are, well, boring. Sorry. I’m sure fans of the bands will love this book. I’m not a fan and there is not much more I can say. It also comes with a Cd: “…a soundtrack recorded and re-mixed exclusively for the book by the likes of This Song Is a Mess But So Am I, Grouper and The Yellow Swans. The soundtrack also features field recordings made by Horvitz as the Xiu Xiu crew crisscrossed the United States, their call and response antics seen and heard here now.” In short: great idea, poor outcome. 24,95 $

The Vegetarian Myth – food, justice, and sustainability – Lierre Keith

If you have a basic knowledge understandig of how human beeing and nature functions, you don’t need to read this book. Human beeing is omnivore and nature is about eating and being eaten – whats new. The author herself was a vegan for 20 years and, according to her, that ruined her body. Now she eats meat and diary products again, feels better and beats on vegetarians/vegans probably with the same vehemence, she was sceaming against anybody who was not vegan in the past. If you are one of those vegans that believes if all human beeings would stop eating animals, the world would be on the save side and all you know about your diet is that it is meat free… then you should read this. To understand what the whole “spiel” is about. A lot could have been written about this book – which by the way – was not easy to read, shitloads of information, statistics, numbers scientific “facts” (soy gives you cancer….), but I decided not to comment every good point and a lot of the bad parts (like all the mysticism… tree roots “eat” human bodys out of graves….) of the book, it would be a waste of time. The 300 pages basically have one message: “Vegetarism is bad for you and the earth, so is factory farming – if you eat local animal sourced food all will be well and you healty.” Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of truth and good points in this book that I agree with and which is just plain facts. But a lot of it is just so “not new” and basic and surrounded by so much self anger (no doubt, I would be angry to myself too, would I think 20 years that not eating animal products is THE solution for all and everything) and statistics that “proof” the new thinking of Lierre Keith (she has to learn that statistics are just that and can be read and made up just so they fit any argument). Yes, again, there is a lot of points I agree with, factory farming (be it grain or meat) is a big problem, the earth needs a healty soil to survive, people do use too much cars, etc., etc., but I wish the author would not be so bitter about herself. Then again, there might be hope, maybe in 10 years she writes a book called “How Pornograpy saved my Life” and beats on all her feminist anti pornography friends. Maybe the book just has the wrong title, it should be called “My Vegetarian Myth” since I think a lot of people who decided not to eat meat understand why they are doing it and what little effect it has on the situation of the world. 20.- US $ (dolf)

One might ask why so much effort goes into a design of the bottom of a skateboard when it most likely will be scuffed away? The not so surprising answer is, of course – it helps selling it. And while some companys will not admit it, it is clearly expressed in the editorial from the author, it is alot about “branding” – find a style for the company that a lot of people can identify themselves with and buy. But lets concentrate on the art and the book and put the business aside. This 140 pages hardcover/casebound book has around 400 contemporary skateboard designs, in full colour. On top of that you get more than twenty interviews with some skateboard artists and company creators. There is a lot to see here from 5boro, Alai, Bueno, Chocolate, City, Element, Enjoi, Foundation, Girl, Heroin, Hessenmob, Hopps, Mystery, Popwar, Rasa Libre, Skate Mental, $lave, Stereo Sound Agency, Toy Machine, Zero and Zoo York. Those are the companys featured, most of them have more than one artist designing for them. That means you get a broad variation of styles/art, some of which I like more others less – but hey, that is normal with art. So check it out by yourself, it is a great source for skaters as well as designers.Books like this help that a lot of these graphics are not forgotten, since many of them are only used for one season. 27,95 US $ for 1,2 kg book.

Likin’ The Beaters – Low Fat Vegan Desserts – Siue Moffat

I’m personally not a friend of desserts, be they vegan or not, most of them are sweet and a so called treat. In my world not necessary. But I do know there is plenty of other worlds out there and plenty of people love treats. For them this is the perfect little (15×15cm) dessert cook book, as the title says, it is all vegan. And also with whole flour and decreasing sugar…. so it is not only animal free, but probably also healthy. At least that is the impression I get from reading the foreword by the author. So if: Cakes, Donuts, Candies, Cookies, Bars, Pies, Ice Cream, Puddings, Toppings, Quick Bread and Fruity Stuff – is what you like to eat – this is your book. I read a couple of the recipes and it seems it is easy to make them. The book is illustrated with lino cuts and zany cartoons by eight different artists. Paperback, 10,95 US $ (dolf)

Auf gut 70 Seiten gibt es Rezepte für 50 vegetarische Grillgerichte. Das Buch ist in vier Kapitel eingeteilt, los geht es mit dem “Grillgemüse” (Radicchio mit Blauschimmelkäse, Feta-Zucchini-Schiffchen…). Weiter mit dem Klassiker “Grillspieße” (Halloumi-Kräuter-Spieße, Seitan-Frühlingszwiebel-Spieße…) gefolgt von “Päckchen, frisch geschnürt” (Mangold-Päckchen mit Tofu, Ziegenkäse mit Peperoni und Oliven…). Zum Abschluß: “Fruchtiges” (Birnenhälften mit Roquefort, Ananas “indisch”….) Aufgelockert sind die Rezepte durch “Warenkunde” zu den unterschiedlichsten Themen: Grillkohle, Alufolie, Tempeh, Quorn, Seitan, Tofu und Grillkäse. Für erfahrene Vegetarier nicht alles neu, aber ich hab zuvor auch noch nie von Quorn gehört, also immer für Überraschungen gut. Abbildungen fehlen im Buch völlig, ob ich das gut oder nicht so gut finden soll weiss ich grade nicht – also kann es so wichtig nicht sein. Die Zutaten für die einzelnen Gerichte sind in der Regel einfach zu bekommen und die Zubereitungs-Anleitungen verständlich geschrieben, weshalb davon auszugehen ist das man die leckeren Sachen leicht nachkochen/grillen kann. Sind ein paar wirklich gute Ideen und Anregungen drin, interessante Würzvorschläge (für mich ein wenig zu Knoblauchlastig – aber kann man ja weglassen, bzw. variieren), teilweise exotisch anmutend, aber hey: Probieren geht über immer-das-gleiche-auf-den-Grill-schmeissen. Das Büchlein gibst als Paperback für 6,80 Euro oder als Buch mit MP3/Usb Karte wo das ganze sozusagen als Kochhörerbuch drauf ist. Moderiert von Conrad Ganter kochen Kim Chi Soy und Benjamin Reiss lustig drauf los. Inwiefern sich das brauchbar in der Küche oder am Grill umsetzten lässt, muss jeder selbst entscheiden. This has already been published in September 2006, shortly after the legendary New York club closed. There is a introduction by Richard Hell and then you can see what you missed – basically a dump, haha. The walls of the venue have been covered in graffiti and stickers since 3 decades and never been cleaned, painted or otherwise treated – so you get that authentic look of a indeed legendary club. There is a schematic sheet of the room, so you have an idea how it was cut – very simple. There is the stage and seats, the green room, the bath rooms and the bar.
