This is a nice hardcover book about – you guessed it – Street Art in Valencia, the third biggest city in Spain. The author Luz A. Martin took plenty of photos of street art in her hometown. And she did also asks 7 of the more popular artists (End, Escif, Graffilia, Julieta, Nero, On_ly, Sam3) from Valencia the same five questions. Intersting to see the differences in the answers, but also some similarities. My main problem with this book is: I don’t think she documented outstanding or super interesting street art, sorry. Some of the work is of course great, but a lot of it I would not put in a book. Now the question would be: is there no “better” street art in Valencia, or did Martin just selected what I don’t like too much? Well, at least one gets a good short story about the city and its history and you get to see a lot of really well done photos of (sometimes not so interesting) street art. With the book comes a download code for free texture images download. 150 pages in english and spanish. (dolf)

Spray Paint the Walls, The Story of Black Flag – Stevie Chick

Posted in bücher by Dolf

Omnibus Press, www.omnibuspress.com

I wish I could have been there back then, at the same time I’m glad I was not there – so many of my imaginations would have been destroyed. By the time I saw Black Flag in Germany they “developed” their music style… not in my favour. Anyway, the book is a very good information source if you are interested in the story of Black Flag and ongoings in Los Angeles/Usa and of course the SST label. Chick is a “outsider” (meaning, he was not there back then), but did a pretty good job researching, unfortunally he could not talk to Ginn and Rollins… but both are quoted very many times. With a lot of the other members Stevie did speak, so there is tons of first hand information. If they all remember correctly after all this time… Read about how the band got together, the line up changes, the reasons for those, how SST was born – or became a record label – how the scene was back then, how Black Flag went on tour… it is all there. Not in “oral history style” but written by Chick with many quotes. And, well written I must say! Sometimes, when he talks about albums or songs or describes the music or the live performance, he exaggerates the use of words – I think, but for the rest, it is a lot of facts. You “get to meet” all the members and you can understand what role they played, how they thought and their thoughts about the band. Sometimes the retrospective is more interesting, since more distance is involved. All in all one gets a good picture of the band and its characters.. for example Henry Rollins, who is quoted from one of his books (Pissing in the Gene Pool) “I am a soldier and I travel through the jungle. I know what I’m about and I’m the only one who understands my trip. I hate having to explain myself, it’s like trying to build a house of air…. I have no explanation to give anyone.”- I guess after saying something like this no explanation is required anymore. Ginn also seems to be a total control/ego artist following his own trip. Which in general is fine, as long as the trip is a fine one, I doubt that. But hey, was I there? No. Do I know all these people. No. Maybe it is/was all a big joke, maybe not. So onward with the book, it has 400 pages, after a introduction come 12 chapters, basically chronological history of the band, in the end Acknowledgements, Bibliography and a selected Disography. There is also a bunch of great b/w photos to be looked at. Great band, great book, recommended when you are intersted in the bandhistory. (dolf)

YUPPICIDE – the ultimative VIDEOGRAPHY plus linernotes by Jesse Jones

Posted in news by jörg

The Yuppicide video retrospective – http://unartignyc.com/2010/06/02/yuppi/ – covers the band’s complete lifespan from the late 80’s to the ‘last’ show in the 90′s and the current 2010 reunion. This retrospective – 32 videos !!! – would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of Yuppicide’s own Jesse Jones, who alongside Patrick Baclet/Out of Vogue provided exclusive liner notes for the videos and also opened up his personal archive from which the retrospective draws most of its footage.

Also Jan from Trust Fanzine conducted and compiled interviews with Don Fury/Producer & Recording Engineer, Pavlos Ioanidis/WreckAge Records and all four members of Yuppicide. A German translation of these interviews appeared in the June/July 2010 issue of Trust Magazine.

This is a nice well crafted book from the german photographer Christoph Lampert and shows a selection of collected photographs from 1989 – 2008. Most of the text is in english, half of the photos are b/w (“Classic Years”) the rest is 4c (“Digital Years”) and all the photos are accompanied with text from one of the band members (or the author). Wow, especially from those bands from the 80is it certainly was not so easy to track those people down. The author managed to do so. As most of these books it starts with a foreword (by the publisher) and a intruduction (by the author). The first photo is a shot of HDQ 1989 in Hamburg – glad to see that TRUST-sticker on Dickie Hammonds guitar, that made me smile. Next are 3 shots of Youth of Today from 1989 and I have to comment on what the non-atheist Ray says. “YOT was one of the first Hardcore bands to head over to Europe. …There was no real touring circuit for bands.” This is the proof that not taking drugs does not necessarly help your memory. There have been many bands on tour before YOT and YOT used the already existing touring circuit, in other words, they jumped in a warm bed. Anyway, that is what you get, nothing can be done…. I wish people would get their facts straight. YOT is long gone.. Berlins Jingo De Lunch are next, followed by great shots from: So Much Hate, Soulside, RKL, Kina, False Prophets, Walter Elf, Life but how to live it, The Plot, Mega City Four, Nirvana and Tad – all these pictures are from 1989 and are classics. 1990 starts with Rubbermaids, Boxhamsters, 2 Bad, No Means No, Bad Religion, Samiam, Blyth Power, Sons of Ishmael, The Vernon Walters, Fugazi, All, Spermbirds, Victims Family. 1991 starts with a nice shot of Danbert, Alice and Lou aka Chumbawamba, Crowd of Isolated, Gorilla Biscuits, Nausea. 1993 features D.O.A. and Verbal Abuse. 1995 The Queers, 1996 Boris the Sprinkler and Snuff –Dackelblut and all of a sudden we are in 2000 with photos of Fun People, the Fixtures, Good Riddance, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 2001: Flag of Democracy, Shock Treatment another jump to 2006: The Skreppers, The Thermals (now the digi years start), Mcrackins, 2007: The Rifles, Cursive, Zsk, The Creepshow, The Peacocks, Distemper, Deadline, Ignite, The Gaslight Anthem, Zatopeks, Deep Eynde, Uncommon Men from Mars, Crushing Caspars, Turbostaat, 2008: Mascow, Fake Problems, Peter Pan Speedrock, Gogol Bordello, Eläkeläiset, Far from Finnished, No Use for a Name, Pepper, Die Ärzte, Bug Girl, Anti Flag, The Business, The Bottrops, The Turbo A.C.s, Brutal Polka, The Real Mckenzies and Dritte Wahl (the last 6 bands all from a bigger fesival). The book starts so amazing and ends a bit dissapointing…. While the first 3 years Christoph takes photos of all these great bands from a certain scene in almost chronological order, it is getting less documented after 1991 and the band selection in the end seems to be random and has certainly nothing to do with the first three years. But, this book claims not to be a documentary of the scene, but a documentary of the photographic output of Christoph Lampert – so you get what you get… big gaps from 1989 to 2008 and to the end more and more random bands. And while in the beginning the words of the musicians are great fun to read and bring back nice memorys and the fact that our scene back then did change something and meant a lot. Later on you can tell the bands (not all!) have nothing to say and just babble some rubbish from touring or some storys – again, nothing one can do. But I personally whished the band selection in the end would have been more in tune with all those bands the book starts with… but, again – it is Christophs history. Anyway, it is still a great book and the first 3 years are worth getting it – if you are into books like this. At the end of the book is a photo index of all the photos with date/venue and city plus bandcontact – perfect. And, to top it all off there is a coloured 7″ in the book with unreleased live songs by: Vernon Walters, Soulside, Samian and Pascow.. I would not get it for the 7″….. but it is a nice bonus. 180 pages on nice coated paper, hardcover and limited to 444 copies. 29,80 euro

(dolf)

Skateboarding.3D – Sebastian Denz

s3d

The last 3D book I saw was probably “Loud 3D” back in the early eighties, that showed punk bands… but that is another story…. This book comes in a cardboard-slipcase with a little textile coating. More textile coating on the actual book, it is fully covered (it’s a style concept, matching book/slipcase), with embossed title. You can tell, productioncosts was not a question for this nice project (thanks to Carhartt, I guess…. ). Let me quote from the authors website: “SKATEBOARDING.3D is about space in a phenomenological sense and about human beings creating their own construction of reality within these spaces. With the example of skateboarding-culture I bring up for discussion a hybrid space that is in between virtual and real – a ‘Postvirtual Space’.” Hmm, reading the texts in the book with titles like “Diaphanous zones and layered images” (Deppner), “Bodies in space – the photographs of Sebastian Denz (Honef), “Savestates from a postvirtual space” (Jänger interviews Denz), does not really help me to understand more… of course I understand the project but have to say the writing is much, much overloaded with academic analysis, foreign words and a general word acrobatic. So lets concentrate on the stuff where acrobatic counts – skating. There are so many amazing 3 D photos in this book, I already forgot about the text. There is 21 figures (people) in 21 scenes skating. First I thought: “dude, I don’t wanna see dudes with their boards standing, I wanna see them in action”, but in the whole context it makes sense. For the project a unique 8 x 10 inch large-format-stereo-apparatus was developed and built by a friend. On the exhibitions (yes, they exist too, it is a real project…) you can see some of the professional skaters in the ‘real hyper-reality’ of life-sized high-resolution 3D-images!
All the photos are excellent, you can see the spatial effect so well, especially mindblowing are the Scenes 3, 11 and 15 – it is as 3D as it gets. In the end you get a Index that introduces the skaters, their trick and where and when it was shot. The book is large 35 x 25 so you have big photos you can look at. There is four 3D glasses included so you and your friends can experience the experience at the same time. And I suggest you do, this is a very unique project and book. 49,95 Euro (dolf)

Let Them Know – The Story of Youth Brigade and BYO Records

Posted in bücher by Dolf

BYO Records, P.O. Box 67606, Los Angeles, CA 90067

What a treat! This is probably the most elaborate book I ever saw! Apart from the coffeetable appearance, hardcover, LP-Album size format, 100 pages, nicely coated, full coloured. This book comes with a double red-vinyl LPs integrated in the book, as well as a full length DVD with the documentary movie and a CD with all the music on it – integrated as well. The book is written by the Stern brothers, three of them and shows not only the story of the label and the band, but also goes back in the family history to their childhood and moving from Canada to California. You learn about how and when they got involved with music, their surfer-life, the beginning of the LA punk scene, Skinhead Manor, find out about the shows the brothers set up and what they went thru. Get reminded on the great movie ‘Another State of Mind’ and its making… just about everything a book like this should have: other band members have written in, tourstorys… tons of pictures and illustrations! Over half of the book is pure punk rock and hardcore LA-style. Later comes the Royal Crown Revue in game, as well as That’s It! Well, I guess that is part of their story and has to be in there too… back with Youth Brigade and the label and Punk Rock Bowling. At the end a nice Discography of all the albums so far. Did I mention there is 31 Songs on the album by a lot of BYO bands doing covers of their favourite BYO bands, good idea. Came out great, top bands, top songs, top layout, top everything. And all this for only 44,90 Euro – amazing!

Kostet 9,90 Euro.

Anmerkungen* zu Chumbawamba und mehr – Boff Whalley

Posted in bücher by Dolf

Verlag Edition AV, Postfach 1215, 35423 Lich
Isbn 978-3-86841-021-1

18.- Euro (dolf)
