The question of „how important“ the Germs, or their singer Darby Crash have been for punk or hardcore is indeed questionable, and should not be answered here. For me personally they (him) never had a big importance – but hey!
As in the recently published book by Mullen (We got the Neutron Bomb), this is also total oral history style. Over a hundred people have been interviewed that have been around back then, knew the band or Darby or have been working with them in one way or the other.

That was done with the help of Don Bolles (Germs drummer) and Adam Parfrey. The result is a 300 page book illustrated with over 120 photos. Not only can you read about plenty of details regarding the Germs, but you also find out what was going on in the early LA punk scene. Wild times those where, thats for sure and also pretty scary, it was the period when Est and Scientology instructed a West LA highschool! Imagine that!

Now guess where alot of Punks back then went to school too…. in this context it is also understandable that some people say Darby was a genius, while others say he was just a normal pain in the ass, playing mindgames with the people who followed him – and it seems, quiet a few did. He definetly had some sort of cult status already back then, which is strange, to me. Surrounded by punks, drug dealers, underage prostitutes, Hollywood, perverts and ex-hippys or film stars trying to find their identities it might not be a big surprise that Darby Od’ed in 1980.
This book is a must for Germs fans, it is also a good read for people that are really intersted in detail history of american punk/hc culture. (dolf)
