This is the first book about Riot Grrrl and the author did a fantastic job. Well researched and very good written/put together, it is not a sequence of quotes from the various people (otherwise known as „oral history“) but acutally a intersting to read text about the 90s (1989 – 1994) counterculture Riot Grrrl. While Marcus runs down the timeline very detailed from the birth and existence of the movement, it is never boring. You can learn about how/why it formed, you find out alot about the different characters (they are all in: Kathleen Hanna, Jessica Hooper, Tobi Vail, Allison Wolfe, Erin Smith…..) in the scene and the different streams.

While you can tell Sara is a fan of Riot Grrrl, she is not afraid to also report about antagonisms within the movement and what went wrong, or why in parts it was not different from many other movements by young people, in this case young women who birthed the DIY feminist punk scene, put feminism back on the map, empowered themselves and had a great time playing music. There is also a few bits and clips of illustration here and there. I can totally recommend this book for everybody no matter if you have been around then, or just want to learn about the ongoings a few years ago. It is great education and fun to read, I want more books of this quality. 360 pages, paperback 14,99 $ (dolf)
